Been there, done that - Got the T-shirt.....Afghanistan

Well the news this week here in Afghanistan has not been a good one.

President Karzei shot his mouth off saying that the US and the Taliban have been working together to create security issues which will ensure Foreign Troops will have to stay here longer than Afghanis want.....yeah, riiiiiight.  Dude, when the Taliban gets you, you'll only have yourself to blame.

2 dead and 10 wounded in a "Green on Blue" attack in Wardak.  A helicopter crash in Daman Province killed 5 American troops near Kandahar in southern Afghanistan.

At the same time, things are winding down here pretty damn quick.  They are cleaning out KAF (Kandahar Air Field) one shipping container at a time.  There are vast areas of the base that were jammed full with gear/kit/vehicles etc. and now you could hold a football game in the open space.  Parts of KAF look more open and empty than I have ever seen it in the past three years.

I bought the t-shirt pictured in the photo above today at the PX.  It pretty much sums it all up.  The process as described in the press is pretty much BS.  There is a great rush for the door and we will likely see this wind down much faster than it should.

In the end, this will help the Taliban and hurt the people of Afghanistan.

I know this much - The work we have done here has helped but the early exit is sure to take away from that work especially when we watch things go sideways here after our exit.

I hope I am wrong and would love to see it go better with the Afghans gaining control of their country.  Being wrong about this would mean a self sustaining Afghanistan and more freedom for the Afghans.

" Inshalla " as they say here, translated as " If it be God's will "

CNO Memo on Sequestration

This is not good.

The fools in Washington starting from the one at the White House to many others in Congress have spent us into a $16 TRILLION dollar hole.  This hole is so deep, it will put our nation in a serious "hurt locker".

But we still have millions to send to Pakistan, Jet Fighters to Egypt and wasted millions for the political crap that the politicians value more than our national security.

How bad are things??  Read the enclosed memo from the CNO.

This is about as bad as it gets.

The Truth Is Out There - A MONOLITH on the surface of MARS

This is one of those " Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot" moments when even the most skeptical of people will look at the picture from the surface of Mars and stare in disbelief...

I've seen the Pyramids of Mars pics and agree there is a lot we won't know about what is what on the surface until we can REALLY explore there but this one tops all others...2001 ? HAL ? It seems that SCI-FI is really SCI-NOW....Damn.

I like the "explainations" but you know that back in the lab, the NASA guys and others are saying, " Crap, we can't cover this one up..."

'Monolith' Object on Mars? You Could Call It That
By Natalie Wolchover
LiveScience.com

Amateur stargazers have discovered an intriguing object jutting out from the surface of Mars. The seemingly perfectly rectangular, upright structure, found in NASA images of the Red Planet, bears a striking resemblance to the monoliths planted on Earth and the moon by aliens in the classic sci-fi film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

The object in question was first spotted several years ago after being photographed by the HiRISE camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA space probe; every so often, it garners renewed interest on the Internet. But is it unnatural — a beacon erected by aliens for mysterious reasons, and even more mysteriously paralleled in the imaginations of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, creators of "2001"? Or is this rock the work of nature? [Photo ]

According to Jonathon Hill, a research technician and mission planner at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, who processes many of the images taken during NASA's Mars missions, the object in question is no more than a roughly rectangular boulder.

The HiRISE camera that photographed it has a resolution of approximately 1 foot (30 centimeters) per pixel — impressive considering the 180-mile (300-kilometer) altitude from which it photographs the Martian surface, but not quite sharp enough to capture the cragginess of a mid-size boulder. "When your resolution is too low to fully resolve an object, it tends to look rectangular because the pixels in the image are squares. Any curve will look like a series of straight lines if you reduce your resolution enough," Hill told Life's Little Mysteries.

The location of the boulder at the bottom of a cliff near many other boulders suggests it broke off the cliff and tumbled to its current spot sometime in the distant past, Hill said. Such a perilous location is itself an argument against deliberate placement by aliens: "If I was going to build a monolith somewhere, that's the last place I would put it!" he said. "The debris falling from the cliff would cover it up pretty quickly, on geologic timescales."

[Hill added that the height of the boulder is being exaggerated in the photo by a low sun angle. Photographed when the sun was near the horizon, the boulder casts an especially long shadow.

The ufologists aren't necessarily wrong in calling it a monolith — the word simply translates from Latin as "one stone." But this monolith isn't the masonry of Martians.

Three Empty Suits....Would you buy a used car from them?? Probably not - So why would you bother to vote for them ???

Three-of-a-kind......Three Politicians who have been proven to talk out of both sides of their mouths, promise you anything to get your vote (no matter what the facts are) and are the three biggest proponent of mandatory health plans (ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL by the Federal Courts).....ALL three have shown themselves to be no more than an " Empty Suit ".

You wouldn't buy a used car from any of these three feckless idiots.....so why would you trust them to be in charge of our country??

Romney was elected Governor in Massachusetts and promptly went on the road to run for President....He was a no-show for his job and tried to sell himself to the country.....He failed.

Deval " Spend It All " Patrick has just reelected in Massachusetts (mainly by union supporters) and has started to follow the same pattern, shilling for POTUS instead of doing the job he was just re-elected for....another failure trying to sell himself and his buddy nationally.

Obama has been doing "on the job" training for the past two years and failing miserably.....and now he wants to say he deserves another 4 years.....Are you kidding me??? It is no surprise to me that his new slogan " Winning the Future" abbreviates as " WTF " because every time this fool opens his mouth, WTF? is the first thing I say after hearing his level of stupidity....another failure.

So, there we have it....Three Failures all tripping over each other to try and convince you and me they know better than us and should be trusted to be the one who is in charge of our Government.......Riiiiiiggggghhhht.

I just wish that these three DUNCES would just go do something else and leave the business of running our country to someone who is more qualified and can get the job done.

Right now, I would trust Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey more than any of these three fools.....We need someone who will look out for the average Joe, not the Unions and not the deep pocketed contributors.

The three fools pictured at the top of this post are not looking out for you.....only themselves and their big contributors.........
Give your vote and support to someone else - Tell all three of them to take a hike......
You'll thank me later.

MILSPEAK....Pretty funny stuff that Sailors/Soldiers/Marines/Airmen say....

There are many forms of communication out there....I have been in the Navy where you get " Sailor Speak ", basic words and phrases that become the daily dialogue one hears while in the Navy....Phrases like SNAFU, FUBAR and Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot are not only in use in the service, but have migrated into civilian lexicon...

Here is an updated list of some of the newer ones out there...heard a few of these when I was out in the AFGHN....pretty damn accurate terminology.

Milspeak -

"Back to the taxpayers":
Navy slang for where a wrecked aircraft gets sent.

Beltway clerk: A derisive term for a Washington political operative or civilian political hatchet man—in other words, someone who trades on his supposed political connections. May refer to so-calle" "Washington defense exper"s" who have never served in the armed forces.

"Embrace the suck": Translation: The situation is bad, but deal with it.

Fallujah: An Iraqi city. As slang, however, the phrase "another Fallujah" means a screwed-up place crawling with bad guys.

FOB: Forward Operations Base ("the yard"). Protected area for Iraqi or coalition soldiers.

Fobbits: Derogatory term for soldiers who never leave a FOB.

FUBAR: F***** Up Beyond All Recognition. Fake acronym. A World War II term still in use.

FUBIJAR: A play on FUBAR. F***** Up, But I'm Just A Reservist. A sarcastic jab by a reservist at criticism from a regular.

Groundhog Day: Every day of your tour in Iraq. Terms suggests the days never change—always long and hot, and the same events keep recurring. From the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day.

Hooah: U.S. Army slang. Actually a shout. Signals approval or solidarity. Means most anything except "no."

John Wayne Driving School: Banging up a Humvee in the process of teaching new soldiers to drive it.

LPCs: Leather Personnel Carriers. Better known as boots.

Marineland: Slang for Iraq's Anbar province, which is largely patrolled by U.S. Marines

Mookie: Nickname for Iraqi Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr. See: Mahdi Militia. ("Hey, the Cav's going back into Najaf. Mookie and the Mookie Army are restless again.")

MOUT: Military Operations in Urban Terrain. A general description for house-to-house searches, raids, and patrols in an urban area.

"Pig looking at a wristwatch": Slang for a dumbfounded look. ("Stop looking at that mop like a pig looking at a wristwatch, and clean the floor.")

Ranger candy (also known as GI M&Ms): An 800-milligram Motrin (ibuprofen) pill.

Semper Fi: U.S. Marines motto, short for "Semper Fidelis," which is Latin for "Always Faithful."

Semper I: Pejorative Marine lingo for being overly concerned with one's own personal interests.

Semper Gumby: Another play on Semper Fi. Means "always flexible."

Semper Knife: Yet another twist on Semper Fi. Means "backstabbing."

Turkey peek: To glance around or over an object or surface, such as a corner or wall. ("Now, once you're in there, do a turkey peek around the wall then move to the next building.")

POTUS directs use of NASA for WORLD APOLOGY TOUR....

This ties into the posting I had about all the PC idiots who are all about " self-esteem". We now have to make Abdul and Muslims everywhere feel better about themselves......as if that was something that AMERICANS are truly concerned about right now.....let's think about this - what is most important to our nation right now - unemployment, the economy, financial crisis, terrorism, and oh yeah, that Abdul feels better about himself......WTF?

POTUS is trying to see if he can politicize the use of NASA to help Muslims feel good about themsleves....THIS is exactly what is wrong with POTUS' worldview - If the Muslim nations need to feel better about themselves, then THEY should do something about the vipers in their own midst.....and other issues that have nothing to do with SPACE and everything to do with better conduct by them on Earth.

Seeing our Nation's Space Agency used in this fashion is disgusting. NASA is not ACORN - It has a long and storied History of excellence....NOW, POTUS thinks it can become another tool in his warped PR strategy and another chapter in his " World Apology Tour" -
ARE YOU FRICKIN' KIDDING ME???

This idiot sitting in the White House needs to go - before he sets back the progress we have made over the last 50 years as a leader in Space, Technology, Exploration and Excellence - instead of the leader in all that is Politically Correct and Exceptionally Stupid.

Former NASA chief: Muslim outreach is ‘perversion’ of NASA’s mission
By:
Byron York Chief Political Correspondent

Washington Examiner 07/06/10 11:55 AM EDT

Michael Griffin, who headed NASA during the last four years of the Bush administration, says the space agency’s
new goal to improve relations with the Islamic world and boost Muslim self-esteem is a “perversion” of NASA’s original mission to explore space. “NASA was chartered by the 1958 Space Act to develop the arts and sciences of flight in the atmosphere and in space and to go where those technologies will allow us to go,” Griffin said in an interview Tuesday. “That’s what NASA does for the country. It is a perversion of NASA’s purpose to conduct activities in order to make the Muslim world feel good about its contributions to science and mathematics.”

Griffin calls NASA’s new mission, outlined by space agency administrator Charles Bolden in an interview with the al-Jazeera news agency, “very bad policy for NASA.” As for NASA’s core mission of space exploration, Griffin points out that it has been reaffirmed many times over the years, most recently in 2005, when a Republican Congress passed authorizing legislation, and in 2008, when a Democratic Congress did the same thing.

“NASA has been for 50 years above politics, and for 50 years, NASA has been focused by one president or another on space exploration,” Griffin says. “Some presidents have championed it more strongly than others, and it is regrettable that none have championed it as strongly as President Kennedy. But no president has thought to take NASA’s focus off of anything but space exploration until now, and it is deeply regrettable.”

Griffin says NASA has always played an important, but indirect, role in diplomacy. “I have championed the use of NASA as a powerful diplomatic and inspirational tool for U.S. policy writ large,” Griffin says. “But the way NASA achieves those goals is by doing great things. NASA does those things that make people all over the world say, ‘Wow.’ If NASA is making people say, ‘Wow,’ then they want to be part of what we do. That’s NASA’s role — it’s to do those things that make other people want to join us.”

For all his unhappiness with the new policy, Griffin says blame for the situation does not belong with NASA administrator Charles Bolden, whom Griffin calls “one of the best human beings you will find.” “When I see reports in the media excoriating Charlie for this position, that blame is misplaced,” Griffin says. “It belongs with the administration. That is where policy for NASA is set.

The NASA administrator does not set policy for NASA, the administrator carries it out.”

“This is not about personalities,” Griffin concludes. “It is about the intellectual content of the policy, which I find to be bankrupt.”

SAVE THE SEALS

All I can say is WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT ???? The lawyers in the Pentagon must have their heads up their arses if this is what they feel is worthy of their time and effort.....Abuse of a suspect?? ARE YOU F&*KING KIDDING ME?

I was in Fallujah - These SEALS are worthy of Medals and the fact that that we are doing this to our own people is ridiculous....More like a kick in the balls than a "punch in the gut"

"We have met the enemy and he is us..." Pogo had it right many years ago....

RELEASE THE SEALS and stop this reckless prosecution - we need these men to keep us safe.

Save these SEALS: Navy commandos rate honors, not courts-martial, for terror arrest
Sunday, January 3rd 2010, 4:00 AM - NY DAILY NEWS

· Three Navy SEALS are facing what appear to be courts-martial to warm the hearts of terrorists around the globe.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates must intervene to prevent an injustice that turns the world on its head.
Actually, the SEALS deserve medals. They were members of a team that captured Ahmed Hashim Abed, suspected mastermind of the barbaric murders of four
U.S. contractors in Fallujah in 2004.

Their bodies were mutilated, dragged through the streets, burned and suspended from a bridge. The photographs of the charred corpses dangling above the
Euphrates River outraged the world.

SEALS Matthew McCabe,
Julio Huertas and Jonathan Keefe were part of a squad that captured Abed on Sept. 1 in a picture-perfect operation. They did not fire a shot, though he was armed with a pistol. But Abed later claimed that one of the SEALS had hit him after he was a prisoner.

Yes, hit him. Not stabbed or shot him; not mutilated his body, not set him on fire, not waterboarded him. Hit him.
"A punch in the gut," is the way a defense lawyer described Abed's accusation.

How can those who opened an official investigation of this trifling matter sleep at night?

McCabe, Huertas and Keefe rejected a proceeding called a captain's mast, where punishment is mild, fearing they would be victimized by politics. Besides, many in the military view the proceedings, conducted under Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, as tantamount to an admission of guilt.

So instead of being paid honor due, McCabe has been charged with striking a detainee, dereliction of duty and making a false statement to an investigator. Huertas was charged with dereliction of duty, making a false statement and impeding the investigation. Keefe faces charges of dereliction of duty and making a false statement.
All three have been arraigned, and courts-martial are set for McCabe and Huertas this month and for Keefe in April. They face up to a year in jail, demotion and bad-conduct discharges.

It is bad enough that these men have been subjected to the indignity of formal criminal charges. Even an acquittal at trial would be a travesty. Why must they answer the charges of a terrorist?

McCabe's attorney,
Neal Puckett, has said the matter could still be handled within the Navy chain of command, without staining the SEALS' permanent records.

More than 96,000 people have joined
Facebook pages supporting the SEALS, and dozens of members of Congress have petitioned Gates to stop the proceedings. That's exactly what he should do. A terrorist has already been permitted to inflict too much damage on these American heroes

President JAFO is AWOL

From the WSJ...

Obama Goes AWOL On Afghanistan, "voting present" would be an improvement.

By JAMES TARANTO

...we suppose it's easy to sit on the sidelines and snark. Barack Obama is President of the United States, and he is juggling all kinds of urgent responsibilities. Such as this one, reported by the New York Times:

Mr. Obama will fly to New York on Tuesday for a lavish Democratic Party fund-raising dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for about 200 big donors. Each donor is paying the legal maximum of $30,400 and is allowed to take a date. And hey, if you don't like it, " grab a damn mop!" As Obama said just last week at . . . uh, another lavish Democratic Party fund-raiser.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reports from Washington that "frustrations and anxiety are on the rise within the military" as the president dithers over Afghanistan:

A retired general who served in Iraq said that the military had listened, "perhaps naïvely," to Mr. Obama's campaign promises that the Afghan war was critical. "What's changed, and are we having the rug pulled out from under us?" he asked. Like many of those interviewed for this article, he spoke on the condition of anonymity because of fear of reprisals from the military's civilian leadership and the White House.Shouldn't it be the enemy that fears reprisals?

During the presidential campaign, Obama's opponents mocked him for frequently voting "present" on difficult questions that came before the Illinois Senate. This is even worse. The commander in chief is absent without leave.
------------------------------------------------------

He is AWOL...as we would say in the military when you were confronted with something that made no sense "WTF, over?"
